Tough loss at home05-01-2016

BC Kalev/Cramo started 2016 with a bad loss at home against Baltic rivals VEF 78:86 (39:49). The loss dropped Kalev to the 14th place in VTB in front of Volgograd and Tbilis – Kalev now has 4 wins and 9 losses.

Josh Boone had another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds (but only managed to score 2 points in the second half), while Rain Veideman brought 13 and Arbet 13 pints. For the visitors Martins Meiers had 23 and Mareks Mejeris 16 points. Points in the paint defined the game – VEF had 52 to Kalev’s 32.

First two and a half quarters were quite depressing for Kalev/Cramo. Only Josh Boone offered a few bright spots on offence where he was effective and flashy against smaller players – which lead to 15 first half points. Other main players for Kalev were in trouble on both offense and especially on defense – VEF did what they want and made 17 out of 23 close-range shots in the first half!

After 24 minutes, when VEF just finished a 13:2 run and was already leading 62:41 Kalev woke up. Freimanis scored twice from deep, another one from Veideman and Arbet, spirited defense and with 5 minutes, Kalev managed to go on a 16:0 (!) run and was only 5 points behind.

In the fourth, after Keedus made two baskets the lead for VEF was only 2 points but then Meiers responded with 2 easy buckets and back to a 6 point lead for the guests. Arbet made a three to cut the deficit down to three but VEF got on a roll –  Hakanson and Meiers scored, Jahovics added a three and the lead was back to 8 with three minutes to go. Veideman made a couple of free-throws to keep the faith alive for Kalev but a minute to go the latest signing for VEF, NBA experienced Josh Harrelson made a three and the game was done.
