First game in EuroCup: Kalev/Cramo – Banvit 60:8615-10-2013
EuroCup started for Kalev/Cramo with the big loss to Banvit 60:86. Kalev players got the lead for 21 seconds; game decisive was second quarter, which belonged to Banvit 10:22.
First couple of minutes of the game gave an idea of nothing less than a catastrophe for Kalev/Cramo – two and half minutes into the game Kalev was trailing 0:7
However, game was not decided yet, Armands Skele took his team back to the game (he contributed 9 points with first 8 minutes). On the 9th minute mark Bamba Fall’s dunk put Kalev up for the first and last time (21:20). But from this point on Benvit dictated the game. In the beginning of second quarter Banvit made a 12:2 run and by the half time they were leading 47:32.
In the second half Benvit continued to show their dominace, for the mid-third quarter the scoreboard showed 28-point lead for Banvit. Kalev manged to win the last quarter, but game was already decided by then.
Bamba Fall had 16 points and 7 rebounds, Armands Skele added 13 and Vlad Moldoveanu 10 points. For Banvit Meija scored 15, Rowland and Prepelic both contributed with 10 points.
Even though the game belonged to Banvit, Kalev was better in rebounds 39:32 (offensive rebounds 16:5). But shooting % was that much worse – Kalev managed to make only 2 of their 20 three-pointers. Banvit made 8 of their 18 „three’s.“ Also, when Kalev earned 4 points from free-thows, Banvit made 14.
Kalev/Cramo last participated in EuroCup six years ago. Back then Kalev finished the regular season with 3 wins and 7 losses.
Next EuroCup game will be on 23rd of October, when Kalev hosts Riga VEF.
Coach Alar Varrak comments after the game:” Banvit really had a good game and we don’t have a much of a chance against that level team, if we don’t shoot good. And today we didn’t shoot well at all. That gave them plenty of chance for quick transition game, which they perfectly took advantage of. Skele kept us in a game, but game tempo was really high and it was not possible to keep him in a game for 40 minutes. When I took him out of the game, we lacked aggressiveness. Unfortunately we didn’t also have Rain Veideman today due to injury. I’m glad we didn’t turn the ball over very much and we took more rebounds than Banvit.
Kalev/Cramo’s next game will be on Sunday at home against Nizhny Novgorod in VTB United League. Game starts at 17.00. Tickets are available at Piletilevi.
